Julie Fowlis (2017) - Alterum (a post in English)

I've promised Julie to make a translation. Julie, sorry for my bad English, I hope you'll understand everything. :)

"alterum orbem terratum eam appelant" – 'they call it the other world' (latin)

I’ll do a bold move and let myself to post a few words in four days before it’s official release (a surprise from a Russian Post!) about the new (fifth!) album of a singer to who’s voice (and – honestly – not only the voice) I’ve hopelessly felt in love long ago. :)

New Julie’s CD is her first fully conceptual work. Started as a project exploring Gaelic songs of the "supernatural" and "fabulous" it turned into a work dedicated to the idea of “other” – other places, languages, traditions. It is a story about how to love your own national culture and at the same to be open to knowing and accepting new, yet unknown, but what you can get to know, understand and even love. For example, it’s like to be Russian and to love Gaelic songs and one charming Scottish folk songstress (these are my words, surely).

The music is gorgeous and arrangements are amazing, Julie’s voice is charming and pleases audiophile’s ear. According to the album’s concept most of the songs on the album are not cheerful jigs and reels but an amazingly beautiful ballads. Besides Julie herself a lot of people took part in recording the album – three guest vocalists and few musicians (guitars, bouzouki, flutes, whistles, piano and even cello and – as usual – bodhran). Thanks to that, Julie’s music became more “polyphonic”, enriched with new nuances and beauties. This is probably the best of her albums.

I can post a link to the only track published on Youtube for now. But believe, other songs are even better. :) Hurry, you still can “pre-order” a CD from Julie’s site. :)
